There are many possibilities when it comes to headphones that can be used for the gym.

In this review we will look at the best over ear headphones headphones for working out. I know what you may be thinking.

Can you work out with over ear headphones ?

The answer is absolutely yes. Advances in technology and design have made over ear headphones perfect for working out.

So what are the best over ear headphones for working out?

  1. Under Armour JBL Sport Wireless Train headphones
  2. Soul X-TRA Performance Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones for Sports
  3. Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless
  4. Beats Studio3 Wireless
  5. Bose SoundLink around-ear wireless headphones II
  6. Avantree New ANC031
  7. Plantronics BackBeat Go 810 Wireless
  8. BlueAnt – Pump Zone Over Ear HD Wireless Headphones
  9. Skullcandy Hesh 3 wireless headphones
  10. Sennheiser HD-25

Towards the end of the article, I delve a little deeper into why over ear headphones are better for working out than earbuds.

Naturally the headphones would have to be wireless headphones given that you want to be flexible at the gym and not have wires to contend with.

Listening to music or audio when working out is in order to get into rhythm.

There can also be lots of noise in the gym, and headphones allow you to focus on your work out without getting disturbed.

When I am doing a work out I prefer music that is thumpy , punchy and bassy.

Sometimes I like to have a motivational audio book to listen to whilst on my work out.

You of course do not have to use only over ear headphones for the gym.

You can also make use of in ear earphones or ear buds.

What I like most about ear buds is that, it does not take a lot of effort to adjust them.

For the longest time I used ear buds because I was under the impression that over era headphones would not be sweat resistant and would fall off when doing all of that activity.

Today’s headphones fortunately have a lot of clamping force and can help you go through a 1 hour work out without any problems.

So as a result I replaced my in ear earphones and went almost exclusively for over ear headphones. There are times when I prefer in ear earbuds, such as when I am taking a swim.

I have as a result tested out numerous headphones for the gym and found that there were only 10 that I would be willing to recommend.

So without further ado, here are the

10 Best wireless over ear headphones for working out

Sennheiser HD-25

Sennheiser HD25-1 II Basic Edition
Sennheiser HD25-1 II Basic Edition

Sennheiser is no stranger to the world of headphones, having produced classics such as the Sennheiser PXC 550 wireless.

This review will cover the Sennheiser HD 25.

Sennheiser themselves describe these as the industry standard for DJ headphones and I do not consider that to be an over statement.

The Sennheiser HD 25 are a set of  headphones exhibited in some of the world’s greatest DJ Booths.

These are also portable headphones for those of you looking to travel to places with your headphones.

Just throw the headphones in your backpack or luggage bag and you are ready to go.

These headphones are essentially an upgrade from the original HD 25-1 headphones.

There are but a minor number of differences between the HD 25 and their predecessors, which mostly include the accessories and some aesthetic differences.

The newer HD 25 has been produced with two totally new dies. This is one of the features that distinguishes them from the older version.

When observed very closely with an eye for detail, you can see that the detail of the plastic and the finishing of the edges is different.

From a performance perspective, there have been some improvements made which I will go into in more detail below.

In fact, these would be perfect in environments such as ENG, sound reinforcement, studio monitoring and audio equipment testing.

BlueAnt – Pump Zone Over Ear HD Wireless Headphones

BlueAnt Pump Zone
BlueAnt – Pump Zone Over Ear HD Wireless Headphones

This is another review of a Bluetooth set of headphones.

I was initially hesitant to include these headphones as this brand is not very well-known.

The blue ant for those of you that do not know is a wasp like looking ant that is native to Australia.

So, I guess it should not surprise you that the blue ant headphones are an Australian brand.

This is the BlueAnt Pump Zone wireless over ear headphones HD audio.

For an unknown brand, they certainly have all the bells and whistles that you would expect from the better-known Brands such as the Sony and the Bose.

The headphones include a built-in microphone, a simple One Touch controller, an input jack for Wired listening, 30 hours of playtime and the best part is it comes with a carrying case which is a bonus and rarely included even by top brands especially at this price range.

These headphones do make me reminiscent.

They remind me of the classic Beats by Dre first generation studio wired headphones as well as the first-generation solo’s.

Folding design for compact storage.

The ear cups are BTX Kodak Comfort sealed ear cups with antimicrobial sweat proof cushion.

There are multiple colors to choose from including black/grey, rose gold, blue, red and green.

Plantronics BackBeat Go 810 Wireless

Plantronics BackBeat GO 810
Plantronics BackBeat Go 810 Wireless

Considering the price of the Plantronics Backbeat Go 810, I was not expecting superb performance.

But since I would be using these headphones only for my 1 hour gym session, they only really needed to be on point for an hour a day.

And given this expectation, they definitely lived up to what I had hoped.

Then, one day, I happened not to pack my Sony WH-1000XM3 and had to make use of these headphones for an entire day.

I was actually pleasantly surprised, as they performed decently, especially given that they retail for under $150.

When doing gym workouts the Backbeat Go 810 are some of my favorite cans.

The Backbeat Go 810 wireless headphones are so named owing to the fact that the headphones are made for the active person (those on the go).

Many have called these headphones the younger sibling of the BackBeat Pro 2, so i did a little comparison of the Backbeat Pro 2 vs Backbeat Go 810.

Given the purpose of these headphones, I was looking for something that would not break too easily, and something that could remain on my head for at least 1 full hour without slipping or falling off.

Depending on my mood or planned activity for the day, will often interchange between over ear headphones and earbuds.

For jogging, earbuds are my preferred headphones, but that does not mean you cannot use the Backbeat Go 810 to Jog.

Avantree New ANC031

This is probably not the biggest name in audio around the world, but they deserve to be on a list for headphones for air travel.

Avantree is middle priced audio company that focuses on good quality budget headphones. the company also produces PC gamin adapters.

Active noise cancellation can be activated with a single click of a button.

The ANC button sits on the bottom side of the left ear cup and doubles as the on off button.

The dynamic 40mm drivers along with a Bluetooth CSR chipset ensure that the listening experience is smooth and fulfilling.

Avantree New ANC031
Avantree New ANC031

The sound has been optimized for bass and if you are a bass head you will not mind these cans.

Get engine noise can be almost eliminated by these cans.

The headphones also come in a durable carrying case so that they can be easily stored and packaged.

With the user-friendly interface, you can answer phone calls, adjust the volume, control the playback and even mute the microphone.

When the headphones are in wired mode the ability to control your microphone and your volume is disabled.

The most amazing feature of these headphones is the fact that they come with somewhere around 28 hours of battery life when wireless mode is off.

This is quite impressive especially when compared to most other noise cancelling headphones that retail for twice the price.

The headphones come with a 3.5mm jack for wired listening if your battery dies out.

Bose SoundLink around-ear wireless headphones II
Bose SoundLink around-ear wireless headphones II

I was initially hesitant to get the SoundLink around-ear wireless headphones II especially for the gym.

The main reason being that Bose can price its pieces at the higher end of spectrum.

Bose reminds me of another maker of electronic products (named after a fruit) who have a tendency to produce good products at a premium.

When researching the best headphones for working out, Bose did not come to mind immediately, at least not from my research.

I knew that the sound quality would be decent, but I did not know if they could survive a whole workout.

Then , one day, a friend of myn was mentioning how they have really enjoyed their workout using the Bose Soundlink headphones, and I began to pay attention.

Do not confuse the SoundLink twos with the speaker with a similar name that Bose offers as well. These are the headphones.

At first glance these headphones may look like the less expensive headphones out there, as they do not have all the bells and whistles, but I guarantee you that does not take away from their performance.

I’ll be perfectly honest, I’ve been through plenty of headphones and it’s not easy to stand-out in a very competitive field.

Bose at least in this edition have shown that not only can they compete with the best, but that they can even exceed the best.

This may sound controversial but I would probably rate this even higher than the JBL.

Beats Studio3 Wireless

Beats Solo wireless 3
Beats Studio3 Wireless

Beats has been around for some time as a brand.

The brainchild of Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine, beats’ has had a mixed reception from audiophiles and just pure headphone junkies alike.

Beats was acquired by Apple in 2014 in order for apple to gain an entry point into the competitive world of wireless headphones.

The headphones boast active noise cancellation circuitry and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Beats studio 3 wireless headphones are retailing at less than $300 at time of writing.

The Beats Studio 3 Wireless, is the latest addition to the noise canceling headphone complement of Beats by Dre.

These headphones are the successor to the mixed reviewed Beats Studio 2 wireless. Beats headphones are usually good for lover of Hip Hop and EDM, but the questiion is:

Are Beats good for working out ?

The short answer is yes. this is predominantly due to the sound quality.

The way that Beats headphones reproduce sound is unlike anything out there, especially when it comes to bass.

The thump and bass make them the perfect companion for the treadmill.

 Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless

Sennheiser PXC 550 wireless
Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless

Sennheiser is an audio company that has been in the business for the better part of 70 years.

The latest addition to the Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones offering are the Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless (PXC 550).

The Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless headphones are designed with the travelers needs in mind.

We all know that when it comes to noise canceling Bluetooth headphones, there is usually some level of compromise (or at least there should be) between the specs and the price.

So when the PXC 550 came in at an asking price of $400*, the expectation was that these headphones would have all the bells and whistles and everything in between.

I am not sure what the thinking was in the pricing as this is at the upper end of the Bluetooth noise canceling headphone pricing segment especially given the nature of the competition (Think Sony and Bose QC 35 II).

The Price very quickly dropped to $350* as the market was not as responsive.

But the price has subsequently dropped to below $300*, and at time of writing have been discounted all the way to around $250* and slightly higher depending on where you get them.

Thank goodness that they have dropped the price, because I feel as if this is the price range at which these headphones start becoming competitive.

Soul X-TRA Performance Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones for Sports

Soul X-TRA Performance Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones for Sports
Soul X-TRA Performance Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones for Sports

Soul X-Tra Performance Bluetooth over ear headphones for sport review.

In this review we focus one of the smaller players from a name perspective in the over ear headphones segment.

When it comes to gym headphones there are a few attributes that need to be present.

For One, the headphones must have ear pads that can dry quickly after you have sweat on them.

Secondly the headphones must fit very well, because as you exercise the headphones must stay on and not slip off.

Next the headphones need to be able to be able to pump out quality sounds, they should especially be able to produce decent base and crisp Mids.

From the name, you can tell that The Soul X-TRA wireless Bluetooth over ear headphones are wireless Bluetooth headphones.

Soul is not a brand that I have purchased at all in the past, so you know that I was skeptical about these headphones.

However, after a few uses I was pleasantly surprised.

The Soul X-TRA Bluetooth wireless headphones, have certainly made a name for themselves among the best over ear headphones that are good for working out.

Are earbuds or headphones better for working out?

I have in a way covered this in my introduction. In summary, here are is my assessment on weather or not earbuds or headphones are better for working out.

The advantages of earbuds are that earbuds are lightweight, and they are also easy to adjust.

When one is working out, usually one earbud slips out at a time, so when you adjust it you do not have to stop working out.

With over ear headphones, if the headphones slip off, then you have to pause the work out to adjust them.

At least this is what I thought initially. Today headphones have been designed with very solid clamping force and many have sweat resistant ear buds.

So it is no longer true that over ear headphones are more likely to slip off your head.

The other advantage with over ear or on ear headphones is that they produce better sound, and you can even find a pair that is noise cancelling.

So in short it is my view that  headphones are better than ear buds for working out.

Can sweat ruin earbuds ?

When speaking of earbuds we are also referring to ear pads. So the questions should ask can sweat ruin earbuds or ear pads.

The reason why most manufacturers will advise you not to exercise in their headphones is that the sweat can cause moisture damage and this can cause additional problems.

Because sweat is corrosive, it will damage the memory foam or cushion like material of headphone ear pads.

Your cans will look unappealing and wrinkled as a result. The other issue with the sweat is that your ear pads can start to smell.

It is advised that you remove the ear pads and leave them out to dry or gently wipe them with a damp nut soapy cloth.

If moisture seeps into the electronics of your headphones that could be the end of the functioning of your headphones.

You may notice the sound becoming incoherent and inconsistent.

The other problem with sweat on your headphones is that damage caused by sweat is usually not covered under warranty.

Fortunately there is a solution. That solution is earhugz. The manufacturers themselves describe earhugz as follows.

Ear hugs are sweat-resistant headphone covers with Ultra-Stretch, MAX-DRI™ + Machine Washable fabric to wick moisture away from your headphones.  They come in a range of awesome designs and are all 100% reversible to black”

In short they cover your ear pads and avoid getting sweat on the ear pads. For more details on the ear hugz , click on the following link.
