It captures his unique sound with a BC108 silicon transistor and original specifications. Meticulous attention to detail is seen in its handwired brown circuit board, circular chassis, and accurate tool clones of the original knobs, all in a vintage turquoise hammertone finish. Ideal for Hendrix fans and newcomers to fuzz, this pedal embodies Dunlop’s 50-year legacy of quality and innovation, delivering a playable piece of music history.

Meticulously replicates the original 1969-70 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face.

Built with a tonally rich BC108 silicon transistor.

Impressive attention to detail, including a vintage finish.

True bypass ensures it doesn’t interfere with your tone when off.

Responsive, offers excellent tone clean-up with the guitar’s volume knob

“In” & “Out” inputs are flipped, which can initially be confusing

Why We Like It

The Hendrix Legacy

Jimi Hendrix, the unparalleled master of fuzz, has left an indelible imprint on the world of music.

Known for his exceptional command of a vast array of subtle tonal shadings, his love affair with the legendary Fuzz Face pedal defined the iconic sound that still captivates audiences today.

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face offers not just a pedal, but a piece of history – a meticulously faithful reproduction of the 1969-70 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face used by Hendrix himself.

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal – Craftsmanship and Authenticity

The Dunlop engineering department has done something remarkable here.

They’ve honed in on the ‘Jimi Voodoo’ that made the Fuzz Face such a defining part of Hendrix’s sound.

Built around the tonally rich BC108 silicon transistor and carefully matched to the original specifications, the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face captures the raw essence of the original pedal.

The attention to detail is impressive, from the hand-wired brown circuit board with no solder mask to the 100% accurate circular chassis.

And let’s not forget those tooled clones of the original Fuzz Face knobs, set in the rare and vintage turquoise hammertone finish.

It’s a truly playable collectable for any Hendrix or Fuzz Face fanatic, powered by a single 9-volt battery.

Dunlop Manufacturing – A Legacy of Quality

Dunlop Manufacturing has been at the forefront of creating world-class gear for musicians for over 50 years.

From picks to pedals and every accessory in between, Dunlop sets the industry standards.

Their commitment to pushing new innovations, whether in strings or vintage pedals, has won them a place in the hearts of legendary and current day superstars.

Personal Experience – A Fuzz Face Convert

I must confess, my initial interaction with the Hendrix Fuzz Face was bemusing.

The “In” & “Out” inputs are flipped, much like vintage pedals, which led me to believe it was broken.

On further inspection, however, I realized this quirk was part of its charm.

This pedal’s tone is a revelation, far superior to the Blue Mini Fuzz Face in my opinion.

The true bypass ensures it won’t interfere with your tone when off, and the pedal box itself is a sight to behold with a Jimi Hendrix design adorning it.

If you’re new to the world of fuzz, this pedal would make an excellent first choice.

Nailing the Perfect Fuzz Tone

Fuzz Faces can be finicky, I won’t deny that. However, the Hendrix Fuzz Face surprised me with its responsiveness.

It cleans up beautifully with the guitar’s volume knob, and while you may not get authentic Hendrix tones straight out of the box, a little patience goes a long way.

Run it into a slightly cranked amp or an overdrive pedal, turn up the volume all the way, roll back the fuzz just a bit, and you’re in for a treat.

Of all the Dunlop fuzz faces I’ve tried, this one has my vote.

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face is not just a pedal.

It’s an opportunity to experience a piece of musical history, meticulously crafted to capture the spirit of an icon.

Whether you’re a Hendrix fanatic or someone just venturing into the world of fuzz, this pedal is bound to impress.

Why We Like It

The Earthquaker Devices Hoof Fuzz Pedal: Unleashing Your Inner Rockstar

As a fervent fan of fuzz pedals, my quest for finding the quintessential ‘guitar tone’ landed me on Earthquaker Devices’ Hoof Fuzz pedal. With its sturdy build, incredible versatility, and impeccable sound quality, this pedal has been nothing short of revolutionary in my musical journey.

The Magic of Hybrid Germanium/Silicon Circuitry

A key distinguishing feature of the Hoof is its hybrid Germanium/Silicon circuitry. This dual design gives the pedal its unique tonal attributes, blending the smooth, harmonically rich tones of Germanium with the temperature stability of Silicon, creating an effect that’s not just stable but also pleasingly vintage.

Rooted in the renowned green Russian muff-style fuzz circuit, the Hoof’s design provides a vast gain range, from subtle, organic amp-like overdrive to monstrous fuzz tones.

This expansive range is sure to satisfy your tonal cravings, regardless of whether you prefer light overdrive or raw, hard-hitting fuzz.

 Flexibility with ‘Shift’ Control

The ‘shift’ control is another exciting feature. Working in unison with the ‘tone’ control, it allows you to modify the overall frequency response of the pedal.

Whether you want to boost the highs for a glassy edge, eliminate low-mid murkiness, or add a sludgy stoner rock vibe, the ‘shift’ control has you covered.

The Fuzz character of the Hoof is impressively tight and controlled without losing its ‘guts’.

Even the harshest fuzz tones nestle nicely into the mix, making it an invaluable tool for live performances and recording sessions.

 The Experience

From the moment I plugged it in, the Hoof showed an impressive ability to adapt to various guitars, delivering a distinct, fantastic tone with every instrument.

The pedal’s sound sculpting capabilities are remarkable and it effortlessly alternates between clean overdrive and heavier fuzz, providing an array of sonic possibilities.

What I found particularly intriguing was that, for many styles I play, I didn’t have to fuss over the

Hoof’s placement in my pedal chain. I could just turn it on and let the magic unfold, sidelining my other pedals.

 Playing Well with Others

While it sounds amazing as a standalone pedal, the Hoof also plays well with other devices, delivering pleasantly surprising results in the right combination.

It’s a fun addition to your pedalboard, always ready to unleash new creative possibilities.

 Comparisons and Final Thoughts

The Hoof offers as much gain as an EHX Big Muff, but it certainly trumps the latter when it comes to cleaning up the tone.

The interaction between the ‘tone’ and ‘shift’ knobs allows for a plethora of fuzz tones to be dialed in, a feature I wish was standard on more fuzz pedals.

In summary, the Earthquaker Devices Hoof is not just another fuzz pedal.

It’s a meticulously designed, all-analog, true-bypass fuzz machine built to deliver smooth, natural sustain with impressive consistency.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your fuzz journey, the Hoof is a worthy addition to your musical arsenal.

Whether you’re chasing that heavy, earth-shaking bass or bright, razor-sharp treble, this pedal delivers with ease.

 Variety of Control Options

The pedal comes with a variety of controls – Fuzz, Volume, Hi/Lo Toggle, and a Diode Switch.

Despite the number of knobs and switches, each control brings a unique element to your sound.

 Unveiling the Unique Tones

At first glance, the numerous controls can be intimidating, and the pedal might require some initial tinkering to unveil its potential.

However, once you start exploring, you’ll be greeted with an array of distinct sounds.

The expectation of life turns into a revelation of decay. The Black Arts Toneworks’ Fuzz Pedal encapsulates this experience in a sonic form – thick, evil, yet clear and unmistakable.

It’s perfect for those who take pride in producing truly unique and provocative sounds.

 A Final Word

Despite its intimidating look and initial learning curve, this pedal is a gem that rewards your time and effort.

The quality of this pedal justifies the price tag, as the tones it produces are exceptional and unparalleled.

If you’re searching for a fuzz pedal that truly stands out from the crowd, I’d highly recommend the Black Arts Toneworks’ Fuzz Pedal.

It might just become the centerpiece of your pedalboard.

Keeley Monterey

Keeley Monterey

The Keeley Monterey Workstation, merging vintage sounds with modern tech, encapsulates the 1960s era in a multi-effect pedal combining fuzz, rotary speaker, vibe, harmonic, and auto wah effects. The right stomp switch activates the fuzz channel for rich tones, while the modulation channel offers creative octave effects for vibe and wah sounds. Unique soundscapes emerge from “Kool Vibe” and “Les Rotary” settings, and “Harmonic Wah” introduces fresh effects, functioning as a foot or fixed/auto wah. The Order Switch enables fuzz and modulation effect sequence changes, promoting innovative tones. This workstation caters to vintage enthusiasts and experimental guitarists, offering sound versatility and innovation.

 Successfully reincarnates 1960s era-defining sounds.

Fuzz channel delivers rich, dynamic tones.

The modulation channel encourages creative exploration.

Incorporates multiple sound settings like “Kool Vibe”, “Les Rotary”, “Harmonic Wah”.

Order Switch feature allows unique effect combination.

Some sound settings require an external expression pedal.

Why We Like It

The Keeley Monterey Workstation is not just an effects pedal; it’s a time machine.

This psychedelic box of wonders from Keeley successfully reincarnates the era-defining sounds of the 1960s into a compact, user-friendly design.

With its multi-color finish, diverse controls, and 6 x 6 x 2.5 inch dimensions, this 9-volt powered workstation is a revelation for vintage sound lovers.

 Classic Sounds Reinvented

The Keeley Monterey Workstation isn’t a mere clone of past technologies; it’s a reinterpretation that breathes new life into traditional sounds.

The pedal combines the classic fuzz, rotary speaker, vibe, harmonic and auto wah effects of the ’60s with modern technological advancements to create a kaleidoscope of audio potential.

Fuzz and Modulation – Two Worlds Collide

The right stomp switch brings to life the pedal’s fuzz channel, designed to emanate a rich, dynamic two-transistor fuzz sound that plays wonderfully on any guitar type.

Its soul is the vintage Fairchild Semiconductor transistors that ensure smooth, reliable tones without the fickleness often associated with germanium devices.

The modulation channel is the playground for creativity. With octave effects available for both vibe and wah sounds, you can explore a myriad of musical landscapes.

The Octave Control allows you to dial in an octave up or down, or for a pure vibe or wah sound, set it right in the middle for no octave effect.

 Breaking Down the Sounds

 Kool Vibe

For phaser-like sounds, the “Kool Vibe” setting offers incredible depth and rhythm, akin to the frequency response of a vibe, combined with the unique pulsing of a photo-cell-based effect.

The addition of an octave creates an amazing doubling effect or deep synth bass-like sound.

 Les Rotary

“Les Rotary” offers a chorus and tremolo soundscape that captures the original cabinet’s heart while simultaneously injecting it with a modern spin.

It provides a chorus-like effect with high-end detail, making it perfect for matching any size of power amp with the pedal’s fuzz.

 Harmonic Wah

The “Harmonic Wah” introduces several new sounds to the Monterey Rotary Fuzz Vibe. This section can operate as a regular foot-controlled wah when connected to an expression pedal.

Without an expression pedal, it functions as a fixed or auto wah, with the pick attack and strength triggering an envelope filter sound.

 Innovative Input/Output Features

An additional twist is the Order Switch, which lets you change the order of the fuzz and modulation effects.

The result? A chance to create weird, wonderful, and surprisingly rich tones full of creativity and character.

The Keeley Monterey – A Masterpiece

To summarize, the Keeley Monterey Workstation is a well-crafted fusion of vintage sounds and contemporary innovation.

Whether you’re a Hendrix fanatic longing for his iconic sounds or an experimental guitarist looking for unique tonal options, the Keeley Monterey Workstation is an investment that will continue to give back, sound after mind-blowing sound.

MXR M296 Mini Fuzz: Compact and Robust, Delivering Vintage Tones

For guitar enthusiasts and music lovers alike, I introduce you to the MXR M296, a mini fuzz pedal that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, yet is strong enough to recreate the iconic fuzz tones of the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ era.

MXR M296: Compact Housing, Massive Sound

MXR’s M296 brings you the same vintage tones that are beloved by many but in a mini housing format.

This pedal proves that good things indeed come in small packages.

Despite its size, the unit’s quality of construction is consistent with other pedals in the MXR range, and it’s built to withstand regular, daily use.

 Simple and Effective Interface

Ease of use is a key feature with the M296. Its straightforward two-knob interface allows you to quickly adjust and find your desired tone.

While the pedal does respond to your guitar’s volume knob, it might not offer the range of sensitivity you’d expect.

However, it does allow for tonal variation from wild, high-intensity fuzz to a more subdued, softer fuzz, all while retaining the pedal’s distinct tonality.

 Smooth Interplay with Other Pedals

A significant addition to the M296 is the buffer switch. This feature ensures the fuzz pedal plays well with other effect pedals such as wah, making it a versatile and valuable addition to your pedalboard.

 User Experiences: Building the Tone

I did notice that the pedal’s ability to replicate the same level of fuzz, spit, and sound expected from a silicon-based Fuzz Face.

It was mentioned that while the fuzz wasn’t the most intense out there, the sound was great and the buffer button performed flawlessly.

The build quality was likened to a small tank, indicative of its robustness.

In my humble opinion, I felt that the pedal could be a little weak in the low end.

I even tried pairing this with an MXR Booster to compensate and achieve the desired signal level.

Despite this, the price point was deemed reasonable for the classic sound it offers.

 Final Thoughts: A Worthy Investment

In conclusion, if you’re seeking the same fuzz tones akin to Gilmour’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon,’ the MXR M296 is definitely worth your attention. With its robust construction, simple interface, and compatibility with other effect pedals, it offers excellent value for its price.

If you’re searching for an exceptional pedal that can add a new dimension to your sound, the MXR M296 might just be the answer you’re looking for.

Whether you are a budding guitarist or a seasoned veteran, the chances are high that you’ve come across fuzz pedals.

They add a distinctive character to your sound that can’t be matched by other effects.

Today, I will be reviewing two incredibly powerful fuzz pedals from the “Legends Of Fuzz” series by JHS, The Smiley, and The Bender.

These are more than just pedals; they are tributes to the most iconic fuzz circuits ever made.

Channeling The Legends with The Smiley

Have you ever wondered what powered the raw, distinctive sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Jack White, or Eric Clapton?

It was the magic of the fuzz effect, often specifically the Fuzz Face, and now JHS offers you the chance to channel that same magic with their Smiley pedal.

 Detailed Tone Control

With the Smiley, you get two easily adjustable knobs that control Volume and Fuzz.

Volume is your master output level. Crank it up, and the sound roars to life; dial it back, and it purrs contentedly.

The Fuzz control is where the fun really starts. This knob lets you adjust the amount of distortion, giving you the freedom to dial in just the right amount of fuzz for your sound.

 Unique JHS Mode

The Smiley pedal boasts a unique “JHS Mode” feature, accessible via a button on the side of the pedal.

With a simple press, you can launch your sound into high gain, gated fuzz territory – a sonic landscape so enticing, you might not want to return!

The Bender: Unleashing the Sound of the 70s

The Bender, a faithful replica of the 1973 MKIII Tonebender, offers you a chance to dive headfirst into the past, revisiting the fuzz sounds that defined Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, and The Beatles, among others.

 Vintage Tone, Modern Consistency

While the Bender boasts an authentically vintage sound, it does so with the reliability of modern technology.

It offers the touch, feel, and response of vintage germanium fuzz but with the accuracy and consistency of modern silicon transistors.

This means you get a dependable pedal that offers the same, unforgettable tone, time after time.

Touch-Sensitive Versatility

The Bender’s touch sensitivity is remarkable, offering smooth jazzy runs to heavy fuzz rock lines without needing to tweak any knobs.

It remains crisp and clear, providing a controlled and finite playing experience that doesn’t change the original tone of your guitar.

Conclusion: A Trip to Fuzz Legend

The “Legends Of Fuzz” series is a testament to JHS’s commitment to providing musicians with the tools to create their own legendary sound.

Buyers’ Guide for Best Mini Amplifier For Guitar

Authentic Sound: A quality fuzz face clone should offer a close approximation to the vintage, warm, and rounded sound characteristic of the original Fuzz Face. It should produce smooth, rich fuzz tones, full of harmonic richness and expressive dynamics.

Quality Components: High-quality capacitors, resistors, and transistors are integral to the sound and longevity of the pedal. Look for components that mirror those in the original units, like germanium or silicon transistors, which each offer a distinct sound.

True Bypass: The fuzz face clone should ideally offer true bypass, allowing your signal to pass unaffected through the circuit when the pedal is off, preserving your guitar’s natural tone.

Volume and Fuzz Controls: Just like the original Fuzz Face, a good clone should have controls for both Volume (to set the output level) and Fuzz (to set the intensity of the fuzz effect). These allow for a high level of sound customization.

Compact Design: Although the original Fuzz Face is known for its unique circular design, a clone with a smaller, pedalboard-friendly enclosure can be more practical for gigging musicians.

Reliable Construction: The pedal should be sturdy and well-built, able to withstand the rigors of regular gigging and transportation.

Versatility: A quality fuzz face clone should provide versatility in terms of the different genres it can cater to. Whether it’s blues, rock, or psychedelic music, the pedal should be flexible enough to cover a broad sonic palette.

Battery/Adapter Compatibility: While most guitar pedals these days can be powered by both battery and AC adapter, it’s important to confirm this for your chosen fuzz face clone. Also, ensure the power requirements match your setup.

Price: While the price isn’t necessarily an indicator of quality, it’s still a crucial factor. The pedal should offer good value for money.

Positive Reviews: Lastly, look for a fuzz face clone with positive reviews from other guitarists. They can provide first-hand insights into the pedal’s performance, reliability, and how closely it resembles the original Fuzz Face’s iconic tone.

FAQ regarding the Best fuzz face clone

What pedals work well with fuzz?

When pairing pedals with a fuzz, delay and reverb pedals are popular choices. They can add depth and space to the rich distortion created by fuzz.

A wah pedal, such as the one made famous by Jimi Hendrix, can also work well by providing a sweeping frequency filter for more expressive play.

EQ pedals can help manage the potentially unruly tones of a fuzz pedal, helping to cut through or tame the mix as needed.

Lastly, octave pedals can add an interesting dimension to your fuzz tone, generating additional higher or lower pitches.

Best Fuzz Pedal for blues

The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face is the Best Fuzz Pedal for Blues: This pedal was designed to capture the iconic tones of Jimi Hendrix, a legendary, blues-infused rock guitarist.
